Diversity management is a practice with its roots in equal treatment and equal opportunities. In the present day it has evolved not just to include the factors of social and cultural identity and any disadvantage the invividual may be at on the labour market and it does not try to give moral answers to social problems either, but by today diversity management has become a business philosophy and practice centred around the realisation, evaluation and maximalisation of the individual’s inner qualities and the synchronisation of those within the organisation.
Diversity management is a strategic issue and effectuating it requires complex and synchronised processes. Its first step is creating the diversity strategy, encompassing situational analysis, defining of goals and responsible individuals. Other related management tasks include coordinating actions such as training and development, communication and evaluation.
Diversity management – of which anti-discrimination policies and proactive equal opportunity measures are prerequisites – is also an integral part of companies’ corporate social responsibility programmes.
